STI vs. STD

Diseases that are spread through sexual contact are usually referred to as Sexually Transmitted Diseases – STDs for short. Many experts in this area of public health have suggested replacing STD with a new term – Sexually Transmitted Infection, or STI.

Why? The concept of "disease", as in STD, implies a clear medical problem, usually some obvious signs or symptoms. But in truth several of the most common STDs have no signs or symptoms in the majority of persons infected. Or they have mild signs and symptoms that can be easily overlooked. So the sexually transmitted virus or bacteria can be described as creating "infection", which may or may not result in "disease".

What if I'm HIV Positive?

HIV attacks your immune system, which your body needs to fight infections. When your immune system is compromised, here are some things to consider:

  • An STI may be more severe and difficult to treat. Viral infections like herpes or warts are more likely to recur more often.
  • Infection with another STI, like herpes, can dramatically increase the amount of HIV in your body (viral load) because the immune system is fighting both HIV infection and the other STI.
  • An increased viral load can make transmitting HIV to another person more likely.
  • Many STIs are likely to trigger HIV replication and progression because they stimulate an immune system response. That response includes the activation of dormant HIV in immune cells, which leads to the production of new HIV and the infection of more cells.
  • Some antibiotics used to treat STIs may not be as successful.

If you're HIV positive, you can still get a free, confidential screening for syphilis and other STIs at Gay City.
