Harm Reduction Program

Project NEON

About

What is Project NEON?

Project NEON (Needle and sex Education Outreach Network) is a peer led harm reduction program serving Seattle’s queer community. Public Health Seattle King County created the program in 1993 at the height of the HIV crisis to support and educate folks most at risk of contracting HIV. The program quickly became an important tool against HIV/AIDS.

Today Project NEON continues to provide education, safer substance use supplies, and other tools to individuals in the greater Seattle area with the goal of reducing the likelihood of contracting HIV and other STIs. By empowering community members to better understand the complex relationship between substance use, sexual behavior, and communicable infections, NEON can support their self-determination to make life-enhancing decisions. With these beliefs and up to date information we help lower the transmission of HIV, STIs and Hepatitis C.

Project NEON is funded by the Washington State Department of Health.

How Does Project NEON work?

NEON is a harm reduction program with a team of volunteers who conduct street and community outreach to folks who use substances. The team gathers at the Center weekly for support, to learn about current treatment and prevention strategies for HIV, HCV and STIs and to pick up harm reduction supplies to share in the community

What is Harm Reduction?

Usually when the topic of harm reduction is raised, focus is directed at drug use and specific strategies like needle distribution rather than the philosophy of Harm Reduction. Yes, clean syringes are great, but what happens if you prefer another route of administration? Each person has unique experiences and needs their own mix of harm reduction supplies. NEON’s team of Harm Reductionists connect with folks that use substances to foster self-determination and healthier outcomes.
