Introducing: Captain Rocket & The Action Squad!
Captain Rocket returns with his all new team, the Action Squad, to continue the fight against the spread of HIV. But they need your help. Here are some of the things you can do to help fight the spread of HIV:
- Get tested regularly (every 3 or 6 months)
- Reduce your risk by using a condom when appropriate
- Talk to your doctor about Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
What is PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)?
PrEP is a daily pill that you take to help prevent HIV infection. It's an anti-retroviral drug, normally used for HIV treatment, that studies have shown can help precent the spread of HIV.
Your doctor can prescribe PrEP If you are HIV negative and:
- in a sero-discordant relationship
- a sex worker
- an IV drug user
PrEP will not protect you from other STDs and is best when used with condoms.
Be sure and talk to you Doctor for more information.
What is PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis):
PEP is an emergency treatment that can help prevent infection if you've recently been exposed to HIv. PEP is a 28 day treatment of anti-retroviral drugs, normally used for HIV treatment, that studies have shown can help precent the spread of HIV.
To be effective, you must begin PEP within 72 hours (3 days) of exposure.
You can get PEP from:
- your doctor
- the emergency room
- HIV or urgent care clinics
