For more than twenty-five years, the Emerald City Softball Association has organized LGBT teams. New to the league this year is the Seattle SNAP – Sober Now And Proud. It’s the first time in the history of the ECSA that a team designed for people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction has organized. “We began planning a recovery team about a year ago,” Says Co-Founder Jason Waddilove. “Several of us had played on other teams before, and we thought it was a good idea to form a team that demonstrates what we represent – getting sober in the gay community.”
Waddilove also points out that many of our social outlets in the gay community have traditionally involved drugs and alcohol. “In the past, bars and nightclubs may have been the only option. But these days we know there is plenty out there for people to do besides the bars. You can go out and have a good time without drinking or using drugs.” This idea prompted Waddilove and Co-founder Chris Gabriel to create the Seattle SNAP.
“We’re bringing a whole new meaning to Seattle Gay Softball!” says Gabriel. “Even in terms of sponsors….most teams approach local bars. As people living in recovery, we felt that we could incorporate ideas of recovery into our sponsorships. So our sponsors include Gay City Health Project, Kaladi Brothers Coffee, Seattle Counseling Service, and Sterling Savings Bank."
