Gay and bi men are at increased risk for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B, viruses which affect your liver. They can result in flu-like illness, vomiting, abdominal pain, yellow skin and eyes, appetite loss, exhaustion and dark urine. Chronic Hepatitis B increases your risk of serious liver disease, including cancer. Having HIV can increase the severity of symptoms. The liver processes medications, so Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B can especially impact HIV+ people who are already on HIV medications.

The best way to prevent Hep A and Hep B is vaccination. It's 2 shots for Hep A, and 3 shots for Hep B. Or it's 3 shots total for the Hep A/B combo vaccine. If you started but didn't complete a vaccination series, you'll need to finish it where you left off. Hep A and Hep B vaccines are safe and effective.
